Jeff DeWit, the chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, resigned following the release of a leaked audio recording involving a conversation with Senate candidate Kari Lake. The recording, allegedly from March 2023, was obtained by The Daily Mail and featured DeWit suggesting financial compensation to Lake to keep her out of the 2024 election cycle.

In the audio, DeWit is heard asking if there were any companies that could “put her on the payroll to keep her out.” Lake responded indignantly, questioning if the proposal meant she could be bought. DeWit clarified that the suggestion was for Lake to take a pause for a couple of years, to which Lake firmly declined.

DeWit defended himself, stating the recording was “selectively edited” and taken from a private conversation. He accused Lake of orchestrating the situation to gain control of the state party and claimed the conversation was an open exchange between friends. DeWit also revealed that Lake was employed at his private company during the time of the recording.

Lake has been a prominent figure in the Arizona GOP, known for echoing former President Donald Trump’s claims about the 2020 election. She ran for governor in 2022 but did not concede defeat to Democrat Katie Hobbs. Despite this, Lake announced her intention to run for the Arizona Senate seat.

NFN makes no claims that the audio recordings are real. We are simply reporting the story about the alleged recording as reported by major sources.
