Apple is flying planeloads of iPhones to the U.S. as President Donald Trump escalates tariffs on China, prompting a rush by consumers to buy devices before prices rise. Following Trump’s imposition of a 104% tariff on Chinese imports—including tech products—Beijing responded with an 84% levy on U.S. goods.
Later Wednesday, Trump increased China’s tariff rate to 125%, while pausing tariffs on other countries for 90 days. Apple, which assembles most of its iPhones in China, now faces a potential 29% price jump on the iPhone 16 Pro Max 256 GB, according to UBS.
At least 10 cargo flights have departed India’s Chennai airport carrying Apple products, as the company scrambles to minimize disruption. Apple is also considering shifting more production to India and Vietnam, though such a transition will take time.
Apple’s stock rebounded after the tariff pause was announced, following a $500 billion drop in market value over the previous three days. The company will address the issue in its May 1 earnings report.
