A federal appeals court in New York on Thursday upheld a $5 million jury verdict against Donald Trump in the civil case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll, who accused the former president of sexual abuse and defamation. The mandate by the 2nd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals follows a prior ruling from a three-judge panel in December and the court’s recent refusal to rehear the case en banc.

Trump now has 90 days to petition the Supreme Court for review. The Court is not obligated to hear the case.

Carroll alleged Trump sexually assaulted her in the 1990s and then defamed her while denying the accusations during his presidency. A Manhattan federal jury sided with her in 2023.

A Trump legal spokesperson dismissed the verdict, calling the case politically motivated: “The American People… demand an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system… including the Democrat-funded Carroll Hoaxes.”

The Department of Justice previously asserted it may be obligated to defend Trump based on statements made in his official capacity as president.
