A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday that the Donald Trump administration can continue collecting broad import tariffs while legal challenges proceed. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit will expedite the case, with arguments set for July 31.

The case centers on tariffs Trump implemented in April, including a 10% tariff on nearly all imports and higher rates targeting nations with U.S. trade deficits. The tariffs also affected imports from China, Canada, and Mexico, with Trump citing illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking as justification.

Trump imposed the tariffs using emergency powers granted under a 1977 law, but a lower court ruled in May that he exceeded his legal authority. Businesses and trade groups have criticized the tariffs for disrupting supply chains, triggering market instability, and straining diplomatic ties.

Despite that ruling, the appellate court sided with the administration for now, citing “issues of exceptional importance.” The decision allows the tariffs to remain in place while the court considers their legality.
