Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced plans to introduce articles of impeachment against U.S. Supreme Court justices following the court’s ruling on presidential immunity for official actions. The ruling states that former presidents have absolute immunity for official acts but no immunity for private acts, centering around former President Donald Trump’s alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Trump’s attorneys argued his actions were official presidential acts, while prosecutors contended he was acting as a candidate. Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, expressed her intent to file articles of impeachment, calling the ruling an “assault on American democracy.”

“The Supreme Court has become consumed by a corruption crisis beyond its control. Today’s ruling represents an assault on American democracy,” Ocasio-Cortez posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Congress has the authority to impeach Supreme Court justices, though it has only done so once in history. The success of impeachment efforts remains uncertain, especially given Republican control of the House of Representatives. Republicans have largely supported the court’s decision, with Representative Elise Stefanik calling it a “historic victory for President Donald Trump, the Constitution, the rule of law, and the American people.”

Democrats, however, have criticized the decision, with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stating it sets a “dangerous precedent.”
