Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is seeking $8.6 million in legal costs from a state trooper who accused him of sexual harassment, claiming the lawsuit was part of a scheme by disgruntled state police. His legal team alleges the trooper’s complaint was “copied and pasted” from a report by Attorney General Letitia James, which they argue is discredited.
Cuomo’s attorney, Rita Glavin, says the trooper’s refusal to narrow her allegations caused unnecessary litigation costs, while AG James’s office allegedly withheld evidence, driving up taxpayer expenses. The New York state comptroller’s office estimates the state has spent over $61 million on related litigation.
Cuomo’s spokesperson said any recovered fees would go back to taxpayers. His former aide Rich Azzopardi is also suing the trooper and her lawyers for including him in the original case.
Attorney General James’s office maintains confidence in its findings. The trooper’s attorney, Valdi Licul, responded that “overwhelming evidence” supports the harassment claims.
Cuomo, now running for mayor of New York City, remains the Democratic frontrunner despite ongoing criticism.
