Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo kicked off his New York City mayoral campaign on Sunday, addressing supporters at a tightly controlled event inside a union headquarters in Manhattan while protesters and political rivals denounced his return to politics.
Cuomo framed his candidacy as a rescue mission for a struggling city, stating, “New York City is in trouble,” and citing issues like homelessness, crime, and public safety. He also touted infrastructure projects from his tenure as governor, including LaGuardia Airport and the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.
Outside, protesters from the New York Working Families Party rallied under the banner “Women Against Cuomo,” condemning sexual harassment allegations that led to his 2021 resignation. “Maybe the carpenters think it’s OK to have a groper in office. We don’t,” said activist Ana María Archila.
Cuomo’s rivals pounced on his record, with City Comptroller Brad Lander accusing him of “hurting New York City” as governor, while State Sen. Zellnor Myrie dismissed him as a “former politician clinging to power.”
Despite polling leads, Cuomo’s controversial past and political baggage make his path to victory uncertain.
