Cardinal Robert Prevost, a Chicago native who became the first American pope on Thursday, has used social media over the years to subtly criticize policies of the Trump administration, including on immigration, gun control, and capital punishment. Now known as Pope Leo XIV, he reposted articles and commentary disputing Vice President J.D. Vance’s interpretations of Christian doctrine and decrying Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric.
A 2023 interview reveals Prevost’s cautious but purposeful use of social media. “We really have to think several times before speaking or before writing a message on Twitter,” he told Vatican News, warning of fueling division while seeking to spread the Gospel.
In his first speech as pontiff, Leo XIV called for unity, bridge-building, and compassion: “We have to show our charity, presence and dialogue with love.”
Trump responded warmly, writing that meeting the new pope would be “a very meaningful moment.” Vance, a Catholic convert, had met with Pope Francis shortly before his death last month and called it “a great honor.”
