White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized Amazon on Tuesday over reports the company plans to display how tariffs are impacting prices, calling it a “hostile and political act.”
Amazon’s move would show customers how much of an item’s cost is due to tariffs, Punchbowl News reported. The plan comes as Trump’s 145% tariffs on Chinese imports pressure businesses heavily reliant on global supply chains.
Leavitt questioned why Amazon didn’t offer similar disclosures during inflation spikes under President Biden, but declined to comment on Trump’s relationship with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
Major retailers, including Walmart and Target, have recently warned the administration about potential supply chain disruptions and higher prices.
Amazon sellers are already raising prices, with software firm SmartScout finding an average 29% increase on some items since April 9. Amazon said only a tiny fraction of products are affected.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy acknowledged tariffs will likely lead many sellers to pass increased costs onto consumers.
