Amazon is backpedaling after reports it planned to display the cost of tariffs on product listings, a move that had drawn sharp criticism from the White House.
Following a statement from White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt calling the plan a “hostile and political action,” Amazon clarified that only its ultra low-cost Amazon Haul store had considered listing import duties on some products.
“This was never a consideration for the main Amazon site and nothing has been implemented on any Amazon properties,” an Amazon spokesperson said, according to reporting by The Washington Post’s Jeff Stein.
Earlier, news that Amazon might highlight tariff costs to consumers prompted a strong reaction from the Trump administration, which has made aggressive tariffs a centerpiece of its economic policy.
Amazon has faced pressure from sellers amid rising prices due to Trump’s 145% tariffs on Chinese goods. While some third-party sellers have already raised prices, the company insisted that only a small fraction of products have been affected so far.
