Former Rep. Justin Amash (I-Mich) announced his bid for retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow’s (D-Mich.) seat. He left the Republican Party due to his criticism of former President Trump, and is running as an independent in the GOP primary.
His statement emphasizes the need for an independent-minded senator focused on personal freedom.
The GOP primary is contested by several candidates including former Rep. Mike Rogers and former Rep. Peter Meijer. On the Democratic side, Rep. Elissa Slotkin, actor Hill Harper and businessman Nasser Beydoun are running. Democrats welcome Amash’s entry into the GOP primary.
The Senate race in Michigan is slightly more favorable for Democrats according to Cook Political Report.
