Alabama lawmakers rejected a bill Wednesday that would have imposed criminal penalties on parents whose children bring unsecured firearms to school. The measure, proposed by Rep. Barbara Drummond (D-Mobile), sought to require firearms to be secured using a trigger lock, lockbox, or safe, with violators facing up to a year in jail.
Republicans on the House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee voted against the bill, arguing it unfairly punished parents for their children’s actions and imposed restrictions on firearm storage. Rep. Ginny Shaver (R-Leesburg) stated that while she supports safe gun storage, she opposes criminal liability for parents in such cases.
The proposal gained renewed attention after a second grader in Huntsville accidentally discharged a gun inside his backpack at school. Despite the bill’s failure, lawmakers advanced legislation to increase penalties for threats of school violence. Drummond, a gun owner herself, warned of potential consequences, saying, “I hope none of our children die because of this.”
