Donald Trump renewed threats to seize federal control of Washington, D.C., following the assault of Edward Coristine, a former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) employee, in an attempted carjacking early Sunday. Coristine, known publicly as “Big Balls,” was beaten by a group of teenagers while protecting a woman in the city’s Logan Circle neighborhood.
Police said two 15-year-olds from Maryland have been arrested on unarmed carjacking charges, and more suspects are being sought. Trump posted a graphic image of Coristine’s injuries and demanded that teens aged 14 and older be prosecuted as adults.
“If D.C. doesn’t get its act together… we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City,” Trump said on Truth Social, blaming local leaders for what he called lawlessness. He criticized city youth as being “unafraid of consequences.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene supported Trump’s remarks, calling D.C. one of the most dangerous cities in America.
City officials noted, however, that violent crime is down over 25% in 2025, continuing a trend from 2024, and emphasized ongoing concerns about youth carjackings.
