Abortion-rights supporters have raised nearly eight times more than their opponents for November ballot measures across nine states. Data from Open Secrets shows that as of Tuesday, these groups have collected nearly $108 million, compared to $14 million raised by abortion opponents. However, Florida remains a key battleground, with its high spending requirements potentially offsetting the fundraising advantage.
Ballot measures across the states aim to either roll back restrictions or enshrine abortion rights into state constitutions, following the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. While more money generally translates into more ad spending and outreach, some opponents benefit from late campaign contributions and other support, such as legal challenges.
In Florida, where passing the measure requires 60% voter approval, the Republican Party and state government have contributed significant opposition resources. The state GOP has spent $9.6 million on ads, narrowing the gap with the $20.7 million spent by abortion-rights supporters. Additionally, a state government website has voiced opposition to the amendment, sparking a legal battle over the use of taxpayer money in the campaign.
Meanwhile, high-profile donors such as Michael Bloomberg and Marsha Zlatin Laufer have contributed millions to the pro-abortion rights cause. Nationally, the abortion-rights side has seen over 94,000 donors compared to fewer than 2,600 for the opposition.
Notably, two major anti-abortion organizations, The Concord Fund and Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, have not heavily funded campaigns this year despite spending over $40 million in Ohio in 2022. These organizations are focusing their efforts on other political races instead.
