A growing body of flawed research is fueling renewed efforts to restrict the abortion pill mifepristone, used in two-thirds of U.S. abortions. Critics say conservative groups are promoting “junk science” to undermine the drug’s safety record as federal officials signal openness to a review.

A recent paper from the Ethics and Public Policy Center claims a 10% adverse event rate, vastly higher than peer-reviewed studies that place it below 0.3%. Experts say the report inflates risks by including non-emergencies like routine follow-up visits. Another commentary from the Charlotte Lozier Institute also challenges common safety comparisons with Tylenol but lacks peer review.

The FDA and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are under pressure, with Kennedy citing the EPPC paper as reason to revisit mifepristone’s approval. Over 100 studies and major medical groups affirm its safety, but abortion opponents are rallying around the new reports.

Researchers like UCSF’s Ushma Upadhyay say these efforts reflect a strategic disinformation campaign. Despite lacking scientific credibility, the flawed studies may influence policy in an increasingly restrictive landscape.
