ABC News has agreed to a settlement with Donald Trump, paying $15 million to a charitable foundation he plans to establish and $1 million to cover his legal fees. The settlement stems from a lawsuit over false claims made by anchor George Stephanopoulos during a March 2024 broadcast of This Week, where he inaccurately stated Trump had been found liable for rape by judges and juries.
As part of the agreement, ABC News will append an editor’s note to its original article, expressing regret over the statements. The network said it was “pleased” with the resolution.
The case tied into broader legal challenges involving Trump, including a New York court ruling in 2023 that found Trump sexually abused columnist E. Jean Carroll in 1996 but did not meet the narrow legal definition of rape. Trump was also found guilty of defaming Carroll, resulting in $83.3 million in damages.
Trump has pursued other defamation cases, including lawsuits against CBS, CNN, and major publications like The New York Times, though many of these suits have been dismissed.
