Seventy-seven Nobel laureates urged the Senate to reject Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s nomination to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), citing his lack of experience and controversial positions. In their letter, they criticized Kennedy for opposing vaccines, promoting health conspiracy theories, and disparaging respected agencies like the FDA and CDC.

The letter warns that Kennedy’s leadership could harm public health and undermine key institutions. Critics, including public health experts, express concerns over potential vaccine hesitancy, agency interference, and funding shifts to align with his views.

Kennedy, founder of a major anti-vaccine group, has promoted debunked claims linking vaccines to autism and seeks to eliminate fluoride from drinking water. He has also pledged to overhaul the FDA, calling its regulators “sock puppets” and threatening mass firings.

If confirmed, Kennedy would oversee a $2 trillion budget and 13 agencies responsible for Medicare, Medicaid, pandemic response, and drug approvals. The laureates argue his appointment would jeopardize public health and global leadership in health sciences.
