Scott Pelley on Sunday paid tribute to former “60 Minutes” executive producer Bill Owens, who resigned last week, citing new corporate oversight following a lawsuit filed by President Trump.
“It was hard on him and it was hard on us. But he did it for us — and you,” Pelley said at the end of Sunday’s CBS News broadcast, adding that Owens’ resignation showed “he was the right person to lead.”
Owens stepped down after Paramount Global, CBS News’ parent company, began requiring added supervision of “60 Minutes” stories. The extra review follows Trump’s $20 billion lawsuit against the network over its editing of a Kamala Harris interview. Paramount is also seeking merger approval from the Trump administration.
Pelley told viewers that none of the show’s stories had been blocked, but Owens felt independence had been compromised.
Despite new oversight, “60 Minutes” continues to air critical reports on the administration, including Sunday’s story on NIH budget cuts.
