Education Secretary Linda McMahon confirmed Friday that around 300 employees at the Department of Education accepted a $25,000 buyout offer to quit their jobs as part of the administration’s efforts to dismantle the agency.

The buyout provision, which was announced last Friday and expired by Monday midnight, warned staff that significant layoffs were coming. Only employees with at least three years of service and no recent bonuses or loan repayment benefits were eligible.

“This was a one-time offer ahead of a very significant Reduction in Force for the U.S. Department of Education,” said Jacqueline Clay, the department’s chief human capital officer, in an internal email.

The move follows dozens of prior firings and administrative suspensions at the agency, with President Trump and McMahon actively working to dismantle the department. Trump is reportedly preparing to sign an executive order to accelerate the process, which could come as soon as Friday.
