A caravan of about 1,500 migrants from Central and South America is heading toward the U.S. border ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. Concerns over potential policy shifts have sparked political tensions. Republicans accuse President Joe Biden of loosening immigration controls in his final days.

Brayan Velázquez, a Guatemalan migrant, expressed fear over Trump’s plans, particularly the rumored elimination of the CBP One appointment system. “We ask the U.S. government to help us because there are many needs in our countries,” he said.

Trump’s incoming border czar, Tom Homan, urged strict action, saying, “President Trump needs to make a phone call…or they will have consequences like they did before.” Trump has pledged stronger border enforcement and mass deportations.

The Biden administration, meanwhile, faces criticism for policy adjustments. Reports indicate New York City migrants may soon bypass in-person ICE check-ins using an app some say is unreliable. Immigration attorney Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch criticized Biden for not establishing firmer protections.

Former Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan condemned Senate Democrats for proposing $750 million for migrant resettlement, arguing it undermines public demands for tighter border controls. Morgan accused Biden’s administration of hindering Trump’s transition and border policies.
