More than 120 liberal nonprofit organizations issued a joint letter Wednesday warning against a potential Trump administration crackdown on left-leaning groups following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The letter, signed by 136 groups including the Ford Foundation, Tides Foundation, and George Soros’ Open Society Foundations, condemned political violence but said nonprofits should not be targeted for their missions or values. “Attempts to silence speech, criminalize opposing viewpoints and misrepresent and limit charitable giving undermine our democracy and harm all Americans,” the statement read.

The pushback comes as President Donald Trump and administration officials have suggested left-wing groups fueled unrest leading up to Kirk’s assassination in Utah, where 22-year-old Tyler Robinson has been charged. Trump has repeatedly blamed the “radical left” for the killing and said his administration would investigate organizations he claims encourage violence.

The nonprofits urged unity, writing that philanthropy “exists to bring people together, not drive them apart.” They vowed to continue supporting communities “across all backgrounds, geographies, ideologies, and belief systems.”

The administration’s scrutiny coincides with Trump’s pledge to designate the antifa movement as a terrorist organization, raising further concerns among civil liberties advocates.
