Two female journalists from Iran, Elaheh Mohammadi and Niloufar Hamedi, have been sentenced to jail for up to seven years due to their reporting of the death of Mahsa Amini.
Their report led to protests across the country. The journalists were charged with collaborating with the United States, conspiring against state security, and leading propaganda against the Islamic Republic. They were also accused of violating Iran’s strict dress code for women.
The arrest and sentencing of these journalists have resulted in widespread criticism of the oppressive handling of dissent by the authorities. Since the protests began, over 19,700 individuals have been detained and at least 529 people have been killed.
