Wisconsin Republicans introduced a bill to stop paying judges who are suspended for misconduct or criminal charges, following the federal indictment of Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan. Dugan was arrested in April and accused of impeding federal agents attempting to detain an immigrant in her courtroom. She has pleaded not guilty.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court suspended Dugan from her duties but allowed her to retain her $175,000 salary. GOP lawmakers say the bill would prevent “rogue judges” from receiving taxpayer-funded paychecks during suspensions, especially as Dugan’s trial may be delayed until 2026.

The bill is backed by Sen. Cory Tomczyk, Assembly Majority Leader Tyler August, and Rep. Shae Sortwell. Critics say the arrest and suspension are part of a broader crackdown under the Trump administration on judicial resistance to immigration enforcement.

Fifteen Wisconsin judges have been suspended by the state’s high court since 1978.
