MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Political leaders across Minnesota and the country reacted sharply Wednesday after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed a 37-year-old woman during a federal operation in south Minneapolis, triggering protests, demands for accountability, and preparations for potential civil unrest.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz ordered the National Guard to prepare for possible deployment and activated elements of the State Patrol’s response team, citing the need to protect public safety while an investigation proceeds. Walz said the state would pursue “full accountability and justice,” while urging Minnesotans to protest peacefully and warning against federal escalation, including use of the Insurrection Act.

The killing of Renee Nicole Good has drawn fierce condemnation from Democratic officials. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, after reviewing video of the incident, rejected the Department of Homeland Security’s claim of self-defense, calling the federal narrative “bullshit” and telling ICE to “get the f— out” of the city. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said the Trump administration’s expanded ICE presence had created dangerous conditions, while Democratic leaders including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Sen. Chris Murphy, and Rep. Pramila Jayapal called for criminal investigation and limits on ICE authority.

Walz directly accused DHS of spreading propaganda, saying publicly that the video contradicts claims that the woman “weaponized” her vehicle. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said authorities have not seen evidence that the shooting was justified.

Republican leaders and the Trump administration defended the officer, with DHS and President Trump characterizing the incident as self-defense and blaming protesters for interfering with enforcement operations. Trump doubled down despite conflicting video evidence, while Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the officer was struck by the vehicle and briefly hospitalized.
