Two Virginia-based Navy SEALs are facing non-judicial punishment for circulating racist memes that depicted a Black sailor as a slave, according to defense officials. The memes, shared in a SEAL Team 4 group chat since 2022, targeted a platoon member who later lost his SEAL qualifications. Those credentials are now being reinstated, with back pay, following a Naval Special Warfare Group 2 investigation.

The probe found platoon and team leaders failed to address multiple complaints and mishandled the sailor’s disqualification. The two SEALs who shared the memes will receive punitive letters, which may end their careers. Several leaders are also facing administrative discipline.

The sailor’s attorney, Timothy Parlatore, praised Rear Adm. Jamie Sands for reversing the damage and enforcing accountability. The Navy acknowledged “serious allegations” and affirmed its commitment to dignity and respect.

This case adds to a series of troubling reviews about racial bias and command failures within Naval Special Warfare. Critics warn these issues could worsen as Trump administration policies threaten military diversity efforts.
