Two firefighters were killed and another injured Sunday when a gunman opened fire on emergency crews responding to a brush fire near Canfield Mountain in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Authorities believe the suspect deliberately started the fire to ambush first responders.
Sheriff Bob Norris confirmed the incident began around 1:30 p.m. PT and escalated at 2 p.m. when shots rang out. The suspect, later found dead with a rifle, may have died from a self-inflicted gunshot or return fire. An autopsy is pending.
The Nettleton Gulch Fire burned 15–20 acres before firefighting was halted due to the active shooter. Fire crews resumed work around 7:30 p.m.
The deceased included members from Kootenai County Fire and Rescue and Coeur d’Alene Fire Department. The injured firefighter is in stable condition after surgery.
Officials described the attack as “senseless and tragic.” Gov. Brad Little and U.S. lawmakers condemned the violence and urged prayers for the victims. A no-fly zone remains in effect, and investigations are ongoing.
