Chicago, Illinois – President Donald Trump intensified his push for a National Guard deployment to Chicago on Saturday, citing a deadly night of violence in the Loop and claiming that residents are urging him to intervene. In a Truth Social post, Trump described “massive crime and rioting,” asserting that local leaders have rejected federal assistance despite escalating unrest. He wrote that “the people are chanting, BRING IN TRUMP!!!”
The post referenced two shootings Friday night that left a teenager dead and at least seven injured. Chicago Alderman Brian Hopkins said roughly 300 juveniles were involved in a larger disturbance, during which several Chicago police officers were attacked, including one who required hospitalization. The unrest renewed debate over Trump’s broader crime agenda, which has centered heavily on Chicago throughout his presidency.
The president’s renewed demand for federal deployment comes amid ongoing legal disputes. Earlier efforts to station federalized National Guard troops in the city resulted in court setbacks that forced 200 Texas National Guard members to return home. The Supreme Court is now weighing whether Trump can deploy 300 Illinois National Guard troops that he previously federalized, following a lower-court ruling blocking their use in Chicago.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson have repeatedly opposed Trump’s proposals, arguing that federal military involvement would escalate tensions rather than reduce crime. Trump, however, has continued to argue that a National Guard presence is necessary to stabilize the city.
