Donald Trump on Tuesday toured Florida’s newly constructed Everglades detention center, a 3,000-capacity facility built in just eight days under Ron DeSantis’s state of emergency powers. Dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” the center sits in swampy terrain and is intended to house high-risk migrants.

Trump praised the site and urged other states to construct similar detention centers, tying the effort to enhanced enforcement under his proposed tax and spending package. That bill passed the Senate with Vice President JD Vance’s tie-breaking vote during Trump’s visit.

The facility drew immediate legal and political pushback. Environmental groups filed suit, arguing the site violates the National Environmental Policy Act. Meanwhile, immigration advocates condemned the facility’s harsh conditions and lack of due process, comparing it to a “concentration camp.”

Despite this, Trump applauded Florida officials and praised Attorney General James Uthmeier, who faces contempt charges over defying a court order on immigration policy. A second facility is set to open in Camp Blanding after July 4 as part of a broader deportation push.
