INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., President Donald Trump renewed his threat Saturday to support primary challenges against Indiana Republican state senators who opposed a GOP-backed redistricting plan, escalating tensions within the party ahead of the 2026 midterms. Trump singled out Senate President Pro Tempore Rodric Bray after the Indiana Senate voted 31 to 19 against advancing the measure, with more than 20 Republicans joining Democrats to block it.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump accused the dissenting lawmakers of undermining Republican efforts to secure a stronger U.S. House majority, calling Indiana the only state where GOP legislators refused to back such an effort. He vowed to actively support challengers against those who voted no, a message echoed by Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz, who called the senators “traitors” and promised immediate primary campaigns.
The redistricting proposal had already passed the Indiana House but stalled in the Senate after lawmakers raised concerns about mid-cycle map changes and political fallout. Ahead of the vote, Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith warned senators that the Trump administration could withhold federal funding if the plan failed, a claim that added to the controversy surrounding the effort.
Indiana Gov. Mike Braun sided with Trump, saying he would work with the president to challenge Republicans who opposed the map. Others within the party expressed unease with the approach. Former Gov. Mitch Daniels criticized the strategy as counterproductive, arguing Republicans should focus on governing and addressing voter concerns rather than punishing internal dissent.
