Minneapolis, Minnesota — President Donald Trump on Tuesday dismissed an attack against Rep. Ilhan Omar (D–Minn.), suggesting without evidence that the congresswoman may have staged the incident herself after she was sprayed with an unknown substance during a town hall event.

Asked by an ABC News reporter whether he had seen video of the attack, Trump said he had not and mocked Omar. “I think she’s a fraud. I really don’t think about that. She probably had herself sprayed, knowing her,” the president said. When pressed again, Trump added that he had not watched the footage and did not intend to.

The comments came one day after the Department of Justice announced an investigation into Omar related to alleged fraud involving Minnesota social services programs. Trump has repeatedly attempted to link Omar to the broader scandal, though details of the probe remain limited.

The incident occurred as Omar was criticizing the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota and calling for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign or face impeachment over recent fatal shootings involving federal immigration officers. As Omar spoke, a man rushed the stage, telling her Noem was “not resigning,” and sprayed her with liquid from a syringe before being tackled by security.

Omar was not injured and continued speaking after the disruption, telling the crowd that intimidation would not deter her work. The suspect, identified as 55-year-old Anthony James Kazmierczak, was arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault and has not yet been formally charged.

U.S. Capitol Police said the suspect is expected to face the most serious charges available for an assault on a member of Congress.
