President Donald Trump said Tuesday he is personally owed hundreds of millions of dollars from the Department of Justice (DOJ) for what he described as damage caused by past federal investigations, including probes into Russian election interference and his handling of classified documents.

Asked about reports that he is seeking up to $230 million in compensation, Trump told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins that “any money” he receives would go to charity but acknowledged that he would likely have the final say on approving the payout. “It’s interesting because I’m the one that makes the decision, right? … It’s awfully strange to make a decision where I’m paying myself,” Trump said after a White House Diwali celebration.

The New York Times reported that Trump filed claims in 2023 and 2024 seeking compensation for alleged rights violations during the special counsel investigations. Legal experts have raised concerns over potential conflicts of interest, noting that several of Trump’s former defense attorneys now hold senior positions in the DOJ, including Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.

House Speaker Mike Johnson defended Trump, saying he believes the president “is owed that reimbursement” and praised his stated intent to donate any funds. The DOJ has not commented on the claims or approval process.
