NEW YORK, NY — President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk have both endorsed former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the city’s upcoming mayoral election, opposing Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani. Trump, in a social media post Monday, warned he would block most federal funding if Mamdani wins, writing it is “highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required.”

Mamdani, who won the Democratic primary on June 24, has campaigned on universal childcare, rent freezes, expanded social housing, and higher taxes on top earners. Cuomo, running as an independent, said he would not accept Trump’s endorsement, calling Mamdani “a liar” and focusing on restoring stability in city government.

Musk also endorsed Cuomo, criticizing Mamdani’s policies and mocking his name while encouraging voters to “reconsider” their options. Mamdani responded that New York could “file lawsuits” if Trump follows through on funding threats.

With over 735,000 early votes cast, the race is expected to draw record turnout on Nov. 4. Polls show Mamdani leading by nearly 15 points over Cuomo, with Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa trailing further behind.
