Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) suggested that President Donald Trump’s newly built White House ballroom should be demolished if Democrats win back the presidency in 2028. Speaking to NBC News, Cohen called the ballroom “a gigantic blob” symbolizing Trump’s imprint on the building.
The president’s $300 million ballroom replaced the East Wing, which Trump described as a “poor, sad sight” that had been “renovated and expanded and disbanded.” He told Fox News’s Laura Ingraham that the new addition will be “one of the greatest ballrooms in the world.” The administration says the project, financed through private donors, will expand capacity for formal events previously held outdoors.
An October YouGov poll found 54% of Americans disapprove of the construction. Several Democratic senators, including Bernie Sanders and Richard Blumenthal, raised ethics concerns in a letter to Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, demanding a list of donors. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) argued the space should serve the public rather than “the aristocracy,” while Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) said Americans should help decide the ballroom’s future.
