CHICAGO, Illinois — The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that Border Patrol agents were fired upon during immigration enforcement operations near 26th Street and Kedzie Avenue in Little Village, escalating tensions surrounding the Trump administration’s Operation Midway Blitz. The suspected shooter fled in a black Jeep before officers arrested Hector Gomez, who prosecutors say was found with a handgun and charged with aggravated assault and weapons possession.
Federal officials said agents faced violence throughout the operation, including projectiles such as bricks and paint cans thrown at vehicles. Chicago police reported multiple arrests and minor injuries after an officer was accidentally struck by a pickup truck. DHS later said a Mexican national in the U.S. illegally was taken into custody but did not confirm if he was the gunman.
Mayor Brandon Johnson questioned Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino’s credibility, citing “repeated lies to the courts,” while Governor J.B. Pritzker criticized agents for “provoking chaos.” Bovino responded on Fox News, blaming Chicago’s leadership and sanctuary policies for allowing “illegal aliens in possession of firearms.”
Federal officials denied accusations that agents used pepper spray on a car with a child inside, calling it misinformation. A federal court injunction continues to limit the use of force by agents following earlier confrontations in the city.
