Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) announced Sunday he will not seek reelection in 2026, setting up a highly competitive Senate race in a pivotal battleground state. The decision came hours after Tillis voted against President Trump’s tax and spending package, prompting backlash from Trump and fueling speculation about a potential primary challenge.

“It’s been a blessing,” Tillis wrote, highlighting bipartisan accomplishments including the Respect for Marriage Act, mental health funding, and NATO support. He pledged to focus on policy, not campaigning, over his final 18 months in office.

Tillis, 64, narrowly won reelection in 2020 and has faced increasing pressure from within the GOP for his moderate stances. Trump criticized him on Truth Social, signaling support for a primary challenger.

The retirement reshapes the 2026 map. The Cook Political Report moved North Carolina from “Lean Republican” to “Toss-Up,” with Democrats pointing to former Gov. Roy Cooper as a potential contender. Republicans, meanwhile, aim to maintain their decade-long hold on both Senate seats in the state.

It’s not enough for Trump that Tillis is a Republican, he also must bow and take a knee to king trump. Trump insists on loyalty to him only. Trump is unamerican and a total ass hole. .
