U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) formally entered the Tennessee governor’s race Wednesday, confirming long-suspected plans to succeed outgoing Republican Gov. Bill Lee. “It’s official! I’m running for governor to ensure Tennessee is America’s conservative leader for this generation and the next,” Blackburn posted on X.

A prominent Republican voice in Congress and a longtime fixture in Tennessee politics, Blackburn previously served in the state legislature and represented the 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House before becoming senator in 2019. Her candidacy sets up a potential primary showdown with U.S. Rep. John Rose, who launched his campaign at the Wilson County Fairgrounds earlier this year with strong support from rural voters.

Blackburn is expected to draw strength from suburban Republican strongholds around Williamson County, a region where she built her political base. If elected, she would become the first woman to serve as governor of Tennessee.

Her entry adds early momentum to a GOP field that could define Tennessee’s political future well into the next decade.
