RALEIGH, N.C. — Former Governor Roy Cooper is preparing to announce his candidacy for U.S. Senate next week, multiple sources told Axios, setting the stage for a high-profile political battle in North Carolina.
Cooper, a Democrat who served two terms as governor, will immediately become the party’s frontrunner to contest the open seat vacated by retiring Republican Sen. Thom Tillis. Democratic leadership, including Senatorial Campaign Committee Chair Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), has been courting Cooper for months, seeing him as a top-tier candidate with statewide appeal.
Local political analysts say Cooper’s entrance will energize Democrats and reshape the race. “With his strong name recognition and record, he’s the clear favorite in a Democratic primary,” said Meredith College political science professor David McLennan.
Cooper’s decision also comes as Republicans await an announcement from Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of President Trump, who many expect to run. A Cooper vs. Trump matchup would likely draw national attention and funding.
Cooper had been floated as a potential 2024 vice presidential pick but instead took a fellowship at Harvard earlier this year. Former Rep. Wiley Nickel, a Democrat ousted after redistricting, launched his own Senate campaign in April but is now expected to face steep competition in the primary.
