Former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper officially launched his bid for the U.S. Senate on Monday, announcing his candidacy in a video posted to social media. Cooper, a two-term Democratic governor and former attorney general, said the country faces a fragile moment and warned that the upcoming election could determine the future of the American middle class.
Cooper’s entry follows Republican Sen. Thom Tillis’s decision not to seek reelection after public criticism from Donald Trump over a key legislative vote. Democrats see Cooper as their best chance to flip the seat, pointing to his statewide popularity and fundraising potential in the battleground state.
In his launch video, Cooper highlighted his record on balancing budgets, expanding Medicaid, and fighting corporate abuses. “I never really wanted to go to Washington,” he said, but added that “these are not ordinary times.”
He may face a primary challenge from former Rep. Wiley Nickel, who has not confirmed whether he’ll exit the race.
On the Republican side, RNC Chair Michael Whatley is expected to enter the race after Lara Trump declined to run. The NRSC quickly attacked Cooper as a “far-left career politician.”
