PHOENIX, Arizona — Jake Angeli, the man known as the “QAnon Shaman” from the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot, says he has renounced President Donald Trump and plans to run for Arizona governor as an independent.

Angeli, whose legal name is Jacob Angeli-Chansley, became one of the most recognizable figures of the riot after appearing shirtless, face-painted, and wearing a horned fur headdress while shouting through a bullhorn inside the Capitol. He was sentenced to 41 months in prison, the longest sentence among roughly 675 riot prosecutions, served about 27 months, and was pardoned by Trump last year after receiving early release for good behavior.

Now 38, Angeli told media outlets he views the Trump administration as “a corrupt disaster,” citing alleged secrecy around the Jeffrey Epstein files, U.S. ties to Israel, and the recent U.S. military operation in Venezuela. He accused Trump of using the military to “commit the armed robbery of a nation.”

Angeli said he will run outside the two-party system in November, arguing that deception dominates U.S. politics and claiming voters lack truthful leadership. He previously expressed remorse for his Jan. 6 actions and has said he no longer wants to be associated with the “QAnon Shaman” label.
