CHICAGO, IL — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) has called on the Trump administration to pause all federal immigration operations in Chicago over Halloween weekend after reports surfaced of a federal raid near a children’s parade. In a letter obtained by Axios, Pritzker urged the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Border Patrol to suspend enforcement actions from Friday through Sunday.
“No child should be forced to inhale tear gas or other chemical agents while trick or treating,” Pritzker wrote, asking federal agencies to let families celebrate safely. “Please let children be children for one holiday, free from intimidation and fear.”
Federal agencies have not responded publicly to the governor’s request. The appeal follows mounting tensions after U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis rebuked federal agents for disrupting Halloween events in Chicago last weekend. The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has since ruled that ICE Commander Gregory Bovino is not required to report daily updates on local operations.
