Chicago, Illinois — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker on Sunday called for due process following the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis, criticizing the Trump administration for reaching firm conclusions before an investigation has been completed.

In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Pritzker took aim at Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who has said the woman “weaponized” her vehicle and committed an act of domestic terrorism, prompting the officer to use lethal force. Pritzker said such determinations should not be made publicly before evidence is fully reviewed and adjudicated.

The shooting has sharply divided public opinion after video footage was released, with some viewers agreeing with the administration’s characterization and others saying the woman appeared to be attempting to drive away. Pritzker argued that the differing interpretations underscore why due process is essential, particularly in cases involving loss of life and federal law enforcement.

The governor cited previous ICE-involved shootings in Illinois where initial statements from the Department of Homeland Security were later found to be unsupported by evidence. He said those experiences have made him wary of early official narratives.

“When you have video and eyewitness testimony, it should be adjudicated,” Pritzker said. “There should, in fact, be due process.”

Pritzker also accused the Trump administration of disregarding due process more broadly, alleging that U.S. citizens and legal residents have been detained or removed without proper legal protections. He further renewed his call for Noem to resign or face impeachment over her handling of the incident.
