NASHVILLE, TN — A new survey by the Beacon Center reveals that 54% of Tennessee Democrats view socialism favorably, while 31% expressed negative opinions. The findings, released Wednesday, highlight a potential ideological divide as progressive figures like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gain prominence within the Democratic Party.

Beacon Center Senior Fellow for Public Opinion Mark Cunningham said the results could push Democrats further left in primaries but warned it may hurt the party’s chances in statewide general elections. “The favorability of socialism among Democrats is notable,” Cunningham said, “but it could spell doom for the party in general elections if public sentiment doesn’t shift.”

The poll of 1,200 residents, including 336 Democrats, also showed 57% statewide approval for President Donald Trump and 54% approval for Republican Gov. Bill Lee, who is term-limited.

Respondents strongly supported Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops to Memphis, with 63% approving and 33% opposing the move. Both parties agreed political violence is a growing problem, though 32% blamed the left and 18% the right.

The poll suggests deepening polarization in Tennessee as voters brace for the 2026 election cycle.
