Debate is growing in Milwaukee over whether the National Guard should be deployed to address crime in the city. Milwaukee Police Association President Alex Ayala said he is considering writing to President Donald Trump to request troops, telling the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “I’m sure the National Guard would do a great job in helping us out.”
Ayala suggested the Guard could aid police in curbing crime, street takeovers, and staffing shortages. His proposal drew support from Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Berrien, who called Milwaukee “one of 10 cities with the highest crime rates” and pledged to work with Trump if elected.
City and state leaders, however, rejected the idea. Mayor Cavalier Johnson said troops are not needed, and Gov. Tony Evers argued Guard members are “not trained police officers.” He added, “We can handle this ourselves in the state of Wisconsin.”
Rep. Scott Fitzgerald, a Wisconsin Republican, noted crime rates in Milwaukee have leveled off in recent years, questioning whether the city should be a priority for federal action.
