Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek (D) pushed back Saturday against President Trump after he announced plans to deploy federal troops to Portland to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities.

Speaking at a news conference, Kotek said she had told Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem that Oregon could manage its own public safety. “There is no insurrection. There is no threat to national security, and there is no need for military troops in our major city,” she said.

Trump, posting on Truth Social, described Portland as “war ravaged” and under siege from “Antifa and other domestic terrorists.” He said he directed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to send troops and authorized “Full Force, if necessary.”

Kotek, joined by Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and Democratic U.S. Reps. Andrea Salinas and Suzanne Bonamici, criticized the deployment as an overreach. She noted Oregon National Guard members would not be used and said the state attorney general may consider legal action, citing the Posse Comitatus Act.

While Oregon Republican House Minority Leader Christine Drazane supported federal intervention, Kotek argued it would escalate tensions. “Oregon is our home. It is not a military target,” she said.
