COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio House lawmakers advanced two major education bills Wednesday, approving measures that would require public schools to show an anti-abortion fetal-development video and mandate instruction on the positive influence of Judeo-Christian religion in American history. Both bills passed largely along party lines, with Democrats unified in opposition.

House Bill 485, the “Baby Olivia Act,” would require students in grades 5–12 to watch the “Baby Olivia” video or a similar presentation each year beginning in 2026. The bill also mandates a three-minute ultrasound video. Supporters say it strengthens science education, while groups such as Planned Parenthood argue the video is medically inaccurate and misleading, citing misrepresentations of fetal development and gestational age. Parents may opt their children out through a written request.

Later the same day, lawmakers approved House Bill 486, the “Charlie Kirk American Heritage Act,” requiring schools and public universities to teach about the positive impacts of Judeo-Christian religion in U.S. history. The bill outlines examples including the role of the pilgrims, influences on the Constitution, and religious elements of the Civil Rights movement. Critics argue the measure conflicts with the First Amendment by effectively promoting a religious tradition, while supporters say it simply requires teaching historical facts already covered in many classrooms.

Both bills now move to the Ohio Senate.
