SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA — California Gov. Gavin Newsom sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s national address Wednesday, accusing the president of ignoring rising health care costs and grocery prices while centering the speech on himself and political grievances.

In a post from Newsom’s press office on X, the governor summarized Trump’s remarks in blunt terms, suggesting the president’s message amounted to dismissing the financial pressures facing everyday Americans. Newsom followed up with a separate post from his official account mocking the speech as self-absorbed, repeating the word “Me” dozens of times to underline his criticism.

The remarks come as Newsom has increasingly positioned himself as a national counterweight to Trump during the president’s second term. Widely viewed as a potential Democratic contender in the 2028 presidential race, Newsom has leaned into social media to attack Trump’s economic record and messaging, particularly on affordability issues.

Trump’s address focused heavily on what he described as fixing problems inherited from the Biden administration and included the announcement of a one-time $1,776 “warrior dividend” for military service members. Trump claimed the payments were possible because of tariff revenue, a statement later contradicted by reporting showing the funds would be repurposed from existing military housing assistance rather than generated by tariffs. Economists have repeatedly noted that tariffs function as consumer taxes, contributing to higher prices rather than surplus revenue.
