(Sacramento, California) Gov. Gavin Newsom criticized Senate Democrats on Sunday night for approving a bipartisan deal to end the government shutdown, calling it a “surrender” and accusing party leaders of abandoning working Americans. The Senate voted 60–40 to pass a stopgap funding bill through January 30, 2026, with seven Democrats and one independent joining Republicans.

The bill funds most agencies but omits a guarantee to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies, a key Democratic demand. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said a separate vote on the subsidies would occur by mid-December, though House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) made no such promise.

“Pathetic. This isn’t a deal. It’s a surrender,” Newsom wrote on X, adding that Democrats “need more strength from their leaders.” Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) echoed the criticism, calling Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer “no longer effective” and urging new leadership.

Newsom, seen as a potential 2028 presidential contender, made the remarks after recent Democratic victories in several states and amid a global tour that includes appearances in Brazil and at the COP30 climate summit.
