New York, New York — New York business organizations have launched a new alliance aimed at defending Jewish-owned and Israel-associated companies, arguing that recent municipal policies and rhetoric are creating uncertainty for businesses operating in the city. The New York-Israel Chamber of Commerce announced the formation of the coalition this week, describing it as a coordinated effort to serve as a shield, facilitator, and public voice for retailers, startups, and employers tied to Israel or Jewish ownership across the city.

In a statement, Mark Jaffe, president and CEO of the Greater New York Chamber of Commerce and a board member of the coalition, warned that economic discrimination threatens jobs and future investment. Jaffe said Israel remains a close U.S. ally with a strong capitalist economy that supports thousands of jobs in New York through trade, technology, and investment ties.

While the coalition did not directly name Mayor Zohran Mamdani, its announcement cited concerns that recent policy changes and antisemitic incidents are eroding the rights and security of Jewish and Israeli businesses. The group said it believes some actions by local leadership could suppress competition and expose business owners to real-world risks.

Mamdani, who became New York City’s first Muslim mayor last month, has drawn criticism from Jewish organizations for his past alignment with pro-Palestinian advocacy groups, support for the boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement, and his criticism of Israeli government policies. Although Mamdani pledged during his campaign to increase resources to combat antisemitism, some organizations say those assurances have not eased concerns following his early executive actions, including rolling back orders from former Mayor Eric Adams related to antisemitism definitions and Israel-related boycotts.
