NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana — Violent crime in New Orleans declined for a third straight year in 2025, according to police data released Monday, just days after National Guard troops began patrolling parts of the city under orders from President Donald Trump.

The figures show significant reductions in murders, shootings, armed robberies, and carjackings since 2022, when New Orleans recorded 266 homicides and gained notoriety for having one of the highest per-capita murder rates in the country. In 2025, the city recorded 121 criminal homicides, a total that includes cases under investigation but excludes suicides, accidental deaths, and justifiable killings, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

The crime report was released less than a week after 350 National Guard members were deployed, primarily in the French Quarter, following a request from Republican Gov. Jeff Landry. Trump credited the Guard deployment for driving crime “down to almost nothing,” despite the fact that the data reflects trends established well before troops arrived.

Local officials had previously resisted the deployment, arguing that crime was already falling and that Guard members lack arrest and investigative authority. Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said she nonetheless welcomed the Guard as a visible deterrent, noting the city’s police force remains understaffed.

Democratic mayor-elect Helena Moreno initially opposed the move but later said federal support could be helpful during the busy Mardi Gras season. Analysts say New Orleans’ decline mirrors a broader national drop in violent crime since the pandemic, rather than a city-specific intervention.
