Minneapolis, Minnesota — Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) is accusing the Trump administration of deliberately escalating federal immigration enforcement in key cities as part of a broader effort to undermine state authority ahead of the midterm elections.

Speaking Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Murphy said the administration is “creating this mayhem” in swing-state cities to justify federal intervention in election administration. He argued that the deployment of large numbers of Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel is designed to portray Democratic-led states as incapable of governing.

Murphy’s comments followed the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Alex Pretti, an American citizen, by a CBP agent in Minneapolis during a federal operation. The incident occurred amid a wider federal probe into alleged fraud in Minnesota’s social services programs, which prompted the administration to send thousands of federal immigration agents to the state.

In a letter sent Saturday to Gov. Tim Walz (D), Attorney General Pam Bondi requested access to state Medicaid and food assistance records, urged the repeal of migrant sanctuary policies, and asked for voter roll data to ensure compliance with federal election law. Murphy described the letter as evidence that immigration enforcement is being linked to election oversight.

Similar federal deployments have taken place in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, and Maine, raising concerns among local officials about federal overreach and election interference.
